Driving along Hwy 395 in the middle of the desert you suddenly are presented with a 24-foot-tall, 60-ton white marble statue surrounded by Asian looking buildings. Obviously, this is not a Morman shrine or Catholic cathedral so you jump on the brakes and pull into the long driveway. The parking lot was empty with not a human in sight. It turns out this is the Thiền Viện Chân Nguyên Buddhist Meditation Center in Adelanto, CA. A $15 million temple honoring Quan yin one of the most beloved deities of the Buddhist tradition. She is the Bodhisattva of Compassion and many followers believe she possesses healing powers and radiates a white light. Surrounding her along the walkway are 18 other Enlightened Ones all seeming to be having fun.
