Bogota has become one of the world centers for high-art graffiti. Artists come from all over the world to paint and to become known in Bogota. Even though it is generally illegal on public walls, artists request permission from the building owner too ply their art to create one-of-a-kind paintings to decorate the city. Much of the graffiti in certain parts of the city is painted for art-sake. Other graffiti is painted as political protest in different areas of the city. Artists generally respect each other and don’t paint over each other’s work.
We took an afternoon graffiti tour in downtown Bogota. The guide was from New York but currently lived in Bogota. He was well-versed in the artists, various styles, use of color, and social comment. The art was fabulous and the tour was one of the best trips we took in Colombia.
