280-Byzantine Icons – Greece

During the early years of the Greek Orthodox church, the leaders decided that there would be no sculptures or other type artwork in the church. Instead, they allowed the depiction of saints, prophets, and other big-shot people to be painted in a particular artistic style. This painting style allowed for no creativity by the artist, so virtually all of the Byzantine icons appear to be painted by the same artist over hundred of years.
