Silverton, CO is at the 9,000 foot level in the mountains above Durango. It is a shortened name for “Silver by the Ton.” It was a silver mining town during the 1800 to 1900s. So much silver was being mined from the surrounding mountains that is was financially advantageous to build this train to haul up supplies and the silver ore down. The train stops at the end of October. After that, Silverton becomes a ski town with a small lift. The mountains are so steep, that the majority of skiing is extreme on guided tours only.
