Phantom Ranch is located on Bright Angel Creek off the main Colorado River. It has been a hiking and camping destination for years. During the eighth grade, I hiked down the 7 mile trail with a 40 pound pack to stay at the Boy Scout camp for a few days. The trail is so steep that when you finally get to the bottom of the canyon, your leg muscles are burning and you end up not being able to walk for a couple of days. The hike out is on the 11 mile trail that is not as demanding. Great experience during that time, but this is as close as I am getting now.
For the lazy, there are mules that will carry you down the trail where you can stay at a rustic hotel with all of the trimmings. So much for roughing it.
