1217-Wild Dogs – Easter Island, Chile

Large dogs are all over the island. They were originally brought to the island by the missionaries and now roam free. They are dirty smelly beasts that live in the mud and sand, but are very friendly and extremely patient in waiting for a handout from tourists. They will wander into a restaurant and lay down by your chair and wait for a snack. Often the waiters have to chase them out. One night on our way back to our lodge, we were followed by a pack of them across the Tahai park. It’s disconcerting to be in a strange place, in pitch dark, in the middle of a field several hundred yards from anything, surrounded by a pack of large dogs. It turned out well. Once they figured out we didn’t have any snacks, they lost interest in us and ran off.
