Each year, Fairbanks, AK is home to the world champion ice carving competition. It’s held in Fairbanks because the average temperature during the day all winter is below freezing. Carvers have weeks to prepare their beautiful and inspiring creations. We were there on the last weekend the competition and many of the sculptures were beginning to melt and fall apart. A week later, there would be nothing left of the amazing works of art so we were excited to view some of the ephemeral art.
Everyone begins with the same blocks of ice.
All of the sculptures in display order waiting to melt.
