Took the ferry from Skagway to Haines, AK to shave a few miles off the journey and because I hadn’t seen this part of the country on the bike. The ferry ride was problematic. The floors are flat metal, oily, and often wet. This combination makes for an extremely slippery transition on and off the boat. On my last ride to AK I was on a ferry out of Vancouver and saw another biker go down as his foot slipped on the slick surface. He wasn’t hurt, but was embarrassed. I went super slow and even with all of my trepidation, didn’t have a problem even though my heart was in my throat. The ride was smooth and gorgeous.
