Greece has an interesting relationship with its stray dogs. Having a pet is prohibited in Islam so apparently after 400 years of rule by the Turks, Greeks have decided to revere the dog and let them roam where they wish. The stray dogs are picked up, spayed, given shots and a collar and then released back on the street. These hounds are are extremely friendly and haven’t missed a meal in years. They hang around the restaurants and guard tour groups. We were told that they have a pack mentality and will join a tour group and keep the pickpockets away as well as fast cars and motorcycles. The three pooches that marched with us in Old Athens barked at anything that might bother us. As you would expect, they got rubs and snacks.
