281-Guards – Athens, Greece

Every Greek male has to do compulsory military service for a year or so. The one way to get your time reduced is to be selected to be one of the fancy guards of official places. These guards are selected because they are tall, can fit into the uniforms, and can stand absolutely still for hours on end (I mean not blinking). Back in the day I couldn’t smoke enough pot to do that. But these guys do it for a few hours each day on a 24/7 rotation. Every hour they change guards and go through this interesting dance routine. These particular guards were guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
